| Operation Stop The Soda 2009 |
[Feb. 2nd, 2009|12:04 pm] |
Originally published at Aerialistics. You can comment here or there. So will commence Operation Stop The Soda 2009. Starting tomorrow (because I forgot my water bottle today), I will be slowly reducing my soda consumption. I do this periodically when I realize that my soda consumption is out of control.
Starting tomorrow, I will keep track of the number of cans of soda that I drink at work. This is a large potion of the time that I drink soda, so I will track the number of cans and slowly start to replace can by can with water. Either straight filtered tap water, or the talking rain sparkling water when I want a little bit of fizz.
You will be able to see the can/water intake listed in my LifeStream as well as a chart in the sidebar. The chart and lifestream may not be available tomorrow. It will depend on how quickly I can make the backend software for it. Hopefully with rails, it shouldn’t take me more than an evening to do it, but it will depend on how demanding puppy is.

| Lost Gnomes |
[Jan. 31st, 2009|03:51 pm] |
Originally published at Aerialistics. You can comment here or there. The other day, I was taking puppy out for him to do his “business” in the backyard. Because we haven’t protected (sealed off) under our deck, I had to have him on the leash while doing it. So, I was just walking around with him when I noticed something odd under the deck that I hadn’t noticed before. At first, I was confused because I’m pretty they haven’t been there the entire time. I would have noticed them, right?
I found two little lost souls, pictured here:

I’ve seen bad horror flicks that start off this way. Needless to say, a creepy but happy find. They are real freakin’ heavy too. They appear to be concrete with enamel over the concrete.
Now comes the question. What to do with them? We don’t have a garden, they don’t match the Tiki-God heads we have out there, and they are just somewhat creepy. I think some ominous lighting and strategic placement are in order.

| Getting a puppy, maybe, probably |
[Nov. 13th, 2008|12:38 am] |
Originally published at Aerialistics. You can comment here or there. Now that we have a house, the next step is to start nesting, big time, right? So we are going to get a puppy. I have my doubts, mainly because I’m not an animal person, but I’m doing my best to agree because Cord wants one so badly. I’m going to be as supportive as I can.
We are now trying to narrow down our choices. I have 4 breeds that we are considering, 3 pure breeds, 1 “designer” breed. Each have their strengths, and only mild potential health issues. So our choices are:
- A Schipperke
- A Pembroke Welsh Korgi

- A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

- A Puggle

1st 3 pictures are taken from http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/. The last picture is from http://www.puggle-dogs.net/.
I don’t know which one I really want. They all have fairly good temperaments, so it’s a hard choice.

| RoR: Interesting Discovery |
[Nov. 11th, 2008|02:45 pm] |
Originally published at Aerialistics. You can comment here or there. Lately, I’ve been toying with the idea of Ruby on Rails. Lots of good things have been said about Ruby on Rails, and as I’ve been discovering it lately, I realize that, like any overly-hyped thing, it doesn’t quite live up to it’s hype. At least not yet.
I’m still learning lots about Rails and Ruby. Both are fascinating in their own right, and I’m going to at least make a website or two with Rails, I’m not sure how much it will replace django. Development does seem to go faster than django, so maybe I will. Who knows.
One very big thing that i like is the focus on RESTful development. REST is what the web really was designed for, back in the day even if the term REST wasn’t mentioned for years to come.
I like RESTful development, so this is one thing that I really like.
One of the big things I like about REST is the concept of “format”. Information about a resource can be returned in multiple formats. Rails natively supports that with its “respond_to” function.
So right now, I’m working on a website that will display Donations by the charity that they were donated to. Basically, if I have Charity X, and I’ve donated $1000 to it, and I have Charity Y, and I’ve donated $500 to it, I want to represent that data.
So naturally, for a list of donations by charity, my rest url should be this: /donations . Now, the default rendering of this will be an html table that lists each charity and the total amount donated to them. The Charity links to the Charity page, and the donation links to details about the individual donations made.
However, I want to display a bar chart that shows the level of donations made for each charity.
So, keeping with REST, my url should be /donations.png right? To show that it’s a graphic representing the resource list of donations.
Fabulous! And it works out of the box using the respond_to function. However, here’s the rub. Since I’m using the Rails map.resource to setup my RESTful API, I’m using:
<%= image_tag url_for(donation_path(:format=>"png")) %>
Now, does this generate my perfectly restful url above (/donations.png)? Nope. It sure doesn’t. Instead, the above generates /donations?format=png, which is not right. Does it work? Sure thing because of a really neat feature in rails.
That feature is that it looks at the Accepts header of the request to determine the format (if there is no file extension). Since Firefox (haven’t tried IE) sends Accepts for image/png when loading an image tag, it works, but the URL isn’t correct.
I’m still trying to find how to fix the URL issue so that it’s right, and I’ll post a follow-up once I know the answer.
All in all, rails is neat.

| Game Development |
[Oct. 16th, 2008|01:15 pm] |
Originally published at Aerialistics. You can comment here or there. I want to make a game. I’ve decided on that. I even know what kind of game it will be. Picture Incredible Machines crossed with Lemmings and that’s what I’m thinking. It’s just in the initial phases of though, but I want to know if anyone that I know is interested in working with me on developing the game.
I’d like at least one artist, one developer, one sound engineer, and one designer, but would definitely welcome more. Right now I’m leaning towards using pygame, but with the impending release of a new version of XNA Game Studio, C# is looking like a viable option, plus that would allow me to target the XBOX 360 as a platform for the game also.
Anyone out there interested in helping out with the project?
I’m thinking about making it my “December” project and trying to get a playable demo ready by the first of the year.

| Clothes Make the Man |
[Oct. 2nd, 2008|11:51 am] |
Originally published at Aerialistics. You can comment here or there. I am starting a new project involving clothing as a defining characteristic of a man. I am looking for men of all shapes, ages, and ethnicities to model for me for this project.
Each model will need to provide at least 3 of the following clothing options for the shoots:
Dress outfit (a suit or dress shirt, tie, slacks, and dress shoes)
Workout gear (track pants and trainers, etc)
Casual (Jeans, etc)
Outdoorsy (hiking boots, hiking shorts, etc)
Group-specific (skater, punk, hipster, cultural, etc)
Sleepwear (whatever you sleep in)
Also, please let me know if you are comfortable posing nude. I am planning for each model to be presented as a series of 3-4 prints grouped together.
If interested, please respond to my Stranger Add
